Tooth traditions around the world

WALT: look for information

Most people would agree with me that many countries do different things with their teeth. For example: when people put their teeth under a pillow, they believe that the tooth fairy will come and visit them and take their tooth and replace it with money.

Mongolians give their baby tooth to a young dog because they believe that young dogs are considered as guardian angels. The baby tooth is put in the meat fat and it is fed to the young dog. When the guardian angel eats it, it is said that a strong tooth will grow. It is very nice how they believe that young dogs are their guardian angel.

Kids in Pakistan wrap their tooth in cotton and then throw it in a nearby river at sunset for goodluck. This is very interesting because they wrap their teeth in cotton and throw it in the closest river.

In Austria, baby teeth would mainly be transformed into pendant heads or a key ring. Sometimes they would even place the upper tooth under the house and the lower teeth over the roof so that their teeth will always stay straight. To me, this is amazing because of how they transform their teeth into head pendants.

In the Philippines, they hide their baby teeth and make a wish! If they are able to find their teeth after one year, then they can make another wish.  I find this very interesting because they make a wish with their teeth.
Nigeria: Nigeria flag-M-anim.gif
Children in Nigeria have an interesting tradition.  If you're a boy, you hold your tooth and eight stones in your fist.  Girls hold six stones and their tooth in their fists.  The child then closes their eyes, states their name, and counts to the number in the fists.  They then say, "Oh, I want my tooth back!" Next, they throw everything in their fist up in the air and run away as fast as they can.

Children in Russia put their lost teeth in mouse holes in the hope that the mouse will give them a strong tooth as a replacement. It is amazing how Russians also believe in a tooth mouse instead of a tooth fairy.

This clearly shows that we are all not that same. We all believe in different things based on our traditions. Which one of these traditions are you most interested in?

This was the result that Tane and I had when we finished making teeth out of food. We used pink marshmallows as the teeth and pears as the mouth. This was fun to make and I wish we could do it again.

A poem - teeth

Screenshot 2014-05-14 at 2.29.42 PM.png
The nerves in my teeth
Sends messages to my brain
Like when my tooth comes out
I can feel a little pain.

The gum protects my teeth
And my jaw bone
When I took a tooth out
Another had grown.

The bone provides a socket
For the root of the tooth
I am not lying
I’m surely telling the truth.

The root holds the teeth
Inside my jaw
Then I went to the bank
and asked for a withdraw.

The enamel is the part
that everyone sees daily
I felt like playing an instrument
So I chose the ukulele.
